Bhutan, Beyond the Ordinary

Dungkar Naktshang

Dungkar Naktshang

Located in the upper reaches of Lhuentse, Dungkar Naktshang is the ancestral home of the Wangchuck Royal Family. The historic estate was built as a traditional manor house by Jigme Namgyal, the father of the First King of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck.

The complex offers a rare look into 19th-century Bhutanese aristocratic life and architectural design. Today, it stands as a preserved historical monument where visitors can explore the family quarters, prayer rooms, and surrounding countryside that shaped the country’s modern political history.
