Tha Namkhai Dzong (Shingkhar)
Positioned on a strategic mountain spur near the village of Shingkhar, Tha Namkhai Dzong is a historic outpost fortress that once served as an early warning sentinel for Daga Dzong. Built entirely from local slate, rammed earth, and timber, the structure was positioned to command visual lines across the southern approach corridors leading up from the foothill plains.
A walk up to the old fortress site leads through quiet, traditional farming hamlets where terraced slopes yield seasonal mandarin oranges, cardamom, and mountain maize. Because the site receives very few foreign visitors, travelers experience an authentic and uncommercialized village atmosphere, with panoramic viewpoints offering wide-angle looks over the winding river courses and forested ridges of southern Bhutan.
