Samdrup Jongkhar Dzong
Constructed in modern times to serve as the administrative hub and religious seat of southeastern Bhutan, Samdrup Jongkhar Dzong stands as a vital institutional anchor near the border plain. Unlike medieval high-altitude fortresses built on narrow ridges, this fortress was designed on relatively flat, accessible ground, incorporating classic Bhutanese architectural traditions—heavy whitewashed walls, ornate timber cornices, and a central tower (utse) housing sacred shrine rooms.
