Bhutan, Beyond the Ordinary

Orong Mithun Breeding Farm

Orong Mithun Breeding Farm

Located in the mid-altitude hills of Orong gewog, this specialized livestock facility plays a vital role in preserving and breeding the Mithun (Bos frontalis), a majestic, semi-domesticated bovine native to the Eastern Himalayas. Highly prized across Bhutanese farming communities for their strength, rich milk, and superior hybridization with local cattle (siri), the Mithun raised here are distributed to farmers across the eastern dzongkhags to bolster rural agricultural livelihoods.

A visit to the farm takes travelers off the primary highway and into lush foothill grazing pastures and oak forests. Guided walks through the facility offer an insightful look into regional agro-pastoral science and government-supported rural development programs. Along the way, visitors can observe these massive, gentle animals in their semi-wild mountain habitat while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Orong valley.
