Dewathang Heritage Hill Station & Battlefield
Perched on a cool, forested ridge roughly 18 kilometers north of Samdrup Jongkhar town, Dewathang holds a prominent place in Bhutan’s military history. It was the site of the historic 1865 Battle of Dewathang during the Duar War, where Jigme Namgyel—father of Bhutan’s First King—led Bhutanese forces to victory against British troops, successfully securing the kingdom’s sovereignty along the southern border.
Today, Dewathang serves as a peaceful hillside station characterized by pine and oak groves, historic administrative quarters, and a Royal Bhutan Army training center. Travelers can visit the historic battle grounds and memorials while enjoying sweeping views that stretch down from the mist-covered foothills all the way to the expansive plains below. The cooler mountain air makes it a welcome stop for walking tours and regional history exploration.
