Tashichho Dzong (Fortress of the Glorious Religion)
Positioned on the banks of the Wang Chhu river, this 13th-century fortress serves as the seat of the Royal Government of Bhutan and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the Central Monastic Body. Reconstructed in traditional fashion in 1962 without iron nails or blueprint drawings, the complex features massive whitewashed stone walls, tiered red-and-gold timber roofs, and expansive cobblestone courtyards that host the annual Thimphu Tshechu festival.
Because the fortress functions as an active government secretariat during official working hours, visitor access begins in the late afternoon. Arriving between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM lets you witness the daily ceremonial lowering of the national flag by the Royal Bhutan Army. Experienced guides suggest staying outside the outer gates until dusk, when high-powered floodlights illuminate the fortress perimeter against the dark forested ridge behind it.
