Rigsum Pema Chholing Heritage Lhakhang
Located on a peaceful elevated knoll above Damphu town, Rigsum Pema Chholing Lhakhang is an ancient, revered temple dedicated to the three primary protective Bodhisattvas: Avalokiteshvara (compassion), Manjushri (wisdom), and Vajrapani (power). Founded centuries ago and carefully restored by the local community, the temple is recognized for its intimate, wood-scented prayer halls, historical brass butter lamps, and preserved hand-painted thangkas illustrating the life of Guru Padmasambhava.
A visit to the lhakhang offers a tranquil spiritual retreat away from busy roads. The stone-paved courtyard is surrounded by mature cypress and oak trees strung with colorful prayer flags, where local elders from nearby hamlets gather to spin perimeter prayer wheels and chant mantras. Travelers can sit quietly inside the sanctum to observe daily morning water offerings or take in the sweeping vistas of the Punatsangchhu river basin winding through the foothills.
