Tour Overview
While most festivals in Bhutan center strictly on sacred masked dances (chams), the Punakha Drubchen is a living historical re-enactment. Instituted by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 17th century, it honors the local Pazap militia who defended the country from Tibetan invasions. Hundreds of local men donning traditional combat helmets, heavy silk skirts, and red felt boots march out of the Punakha Dzong, blowing whistles and clashing swords along the riverbanks.
This 8-day itinerary immerses you in the living history of the winter capital while introducing western Bhutan’s core landscapes. You will cross high Himalayan mountain passes, walk through subtropical farm villages, observe centuries-old monastic rituals, and complete the climb to Tiger’s Nest.
“Watching the Pazap warriors march out of Punakha Dzong toward the Mo Chhu river is unlike any other event in the Himalayas. It isn’t a show put on for camera lenses—it is an unbroken line of oral history and living ancestral pride passed down through local families for nearly four centuries.”
