National Memorial Chorten
Constructed in 1974 in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, this Tibetan-style stupa stands at the spiritual heart of downtown Thimphu. Unlike classical chortens that enshrine human relics, this monument represents the mind of the Buddha, topped with a golden finial and adorned with intricate wood carvings, slate engravings of wrathful protective deities, and massive prayer wheels.
Travelers often find that the Memorial Chorten offers the most intimate look at urban Bhutanese daily life. From early morning until dusk, people of all generations—from school students and office workers on their commutes to village elders spinning hand-held prayer wheels—gather to walk clockwise around the whitewashed monument. It is a quiet, contemplative space filled with the murmurs of daily mantras and the constant scent of juniper incense.
