Trongsa Dzong (Choekhor Rabtentse Dzong)
Perched dramatically on a narrow mountain spur above the deep gorge of the Mangde Chhu river, Trongsa Dzong is the largest fortress in Bhutan and the historic cradle of the Wangchuck dynasty. Founded in 1543 by Drukpa Lama Ngagi Wangchuck and expanded in 1647 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this massive multi-level complex holds unmatched political importance—tradition dictates that Bhutan’s Crown Prince must first serve as the Penlop (Governor) of Trongsa before ascending the Golden Throne.
The fortress was engineered to command total control over the single trade and transport route linking eastern and western Bhutan for centuries. Inside, the citadel encompasses twenty-three separate temples (lhakhangs), interconnected stone corridors, and sweeping open courtyards framed by hand-painted timber woodwork. Local guides recommend walking up the southern flagstone approach in the morning light to experience the canyon mist clearing below the whitewashed ramparts while resident monks sound ceremonial morning horns.
