Bhutan, Beyond the Ordinary

Gasa Tshachu (Natural Hot Springs)

Gasa Tshachu (Natural Hot Springs)

Situated in a deep river gorge along the banks of the Mo Chhu, Gasa Tshachu is the most famous natural geothermal hot spring complex in Bhutan. For centuries, highlanders and travelers from across the kingdom have journeyed here to soak in its mineral-rich waters, renowned for curing joint ailments, skin conditions, and fatigue. The springs are divided into multiple stone-lined bathing pools, each varying naturally in temperature and mineral composition.

A visit here offers an intimate look into authentic Bhutanese wellness traditions. Unlike modern commercial spas, the springs serve as a vibrant community gathering point where Layap highlanders in traditional yak-hair conical hats and visiting families camp for days, cooking over shared hearths and soaking under the stars. The best time to visit is during the late autumn and winter months, when the hot steam rises against crisp alpine air and snow-dusted pine forests.
